Melanie grew up in Santa Cruz, California. In 1999 she moved to Portland, Oregon to attend Lewis and Clark College. For twelve years she was a custom tattoo artist, and for five of those owned beautiful Icon Tattoo. She is a passionate hobby botanist, and lives in Portland with her talented gentleman and their several cats and miniature chickens. As a high school student she twice attended the UVA Young Writers Workshop, and more recently the Tin House Writers Workshop, where she worked with the wonderful Anthony Doerr. In 2013 her short story "Goodbye to the Small Man" was published by the Kenyon Review. She has several books forthcoming, including a novel and a book of short stories.
